A 39-year-old man was killed by a Florida East Coast Railway train in Oakland Park.
Guy Merkle was riding his bicycle south on North Dixie Highway as the train, also traveling south, approached the intersection at Oakland Park Boulevard, said Liz Calzadilla-Fiallo, a spokeswoman for the Broward Sheriff's Office. Witnesses told detectives Merkle was feverishly pedaling his green Mongoose bicycle seconds before he was hit by the train.
The crossing lights at the intersection were flashing, the gates were down and the conductor blew the horn repeatedly before hitting the bicyclist at 7:11 p.m., witnesses reportedly told investigators. The force of the impact launched the man 108 feet from where he was hit, Calzadilla-Fiallo said.
