OSHA Wants Mcdonald's And Gas Company Fined

October 28, 2005

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the federal agency that oversees workplace safety, is proposing more than $30,000 in penalties against a Sanford McDonald's restaurant and NuCO2, a carbon-dioxide delivery company.

The citations are in connection with a January gas leak that killed two men. Both companies are contesting the proposed penalties.

George Torres, a driver for NuCO2, and Christopher Edgar, a McDonald's employee, suffocated by carbon dioxide January 8 as Torres tried to deliver the gas, which is used to carbonate sodas.

Edgar was helping transfer the gas from a compressed-gas delivery truck parked behind the restaurant, just north of U.S. Highway 17-92 and Lake Mary Boulevard.

OSHA is recommending a $12,600 fine against Stuart-based NuCO2 and a $21,150 against the McDonald's franchise.

Both companies have requested a hearing to contest OSHA's citations and penalties, handed down last month.
