OSHA To Look Into Work Accident

November 1, 2005

Kenneth 'Kenny' Vaughn, 38, was killed this month when a front-end loader he had been working on fell and crushed him. He died from blunt trauma August 9 at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.

Manatee County sheriff's deputies said that on the evening of August 8, Vaughn was using one front-end loader to lift up another to reach that vehicle's undercarriage.

He'd been removing an axle from the propped-up loader -- which doesn't run and was used for parts -- when the loader fell.

A Dakin employee who had been with Vaughn ran to get help, the sheriff's deputy said. Co-workers got another loader to lift the machinery off Vaughn.

An emergency helicopter flew Vaughn to Bayfront Medical, where he died a day later.

The federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration, which investigates all workplace fatalities, is looking into Vaughn's death at the Dakin Dairy farm.
