Crash With Parked Truck Kills Man, Others Seriously Injured

November 8, 2005

One person died after slamming a small vehicle into the back of a parked Road Ranger tow truck on Interstate 595 in the early morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The accident happened at about 3 a.m. on I-595 westbound between Florida's Turnpike and Davie Road, said FHP spokesman Lt. Bill Ferrell.

FHP was already on the scene because of an earlier, minor crash in which there were no serious injuries when the fatal collision occurred, Ferrell said. Two lanes were blocked as a result of the earlier accident, and cones were placed in the left and center lanes, Ferrell said. A Florida Department of Transportation Road Ranger tow truck was on scene with its lights and arrow boards flashing. After about 30 minutes, a compact vehicle slammed into the back of the tow truck, Ferrell said.

FHP said the passenger in the rear of the small vehicle, Jeremy M. Humphreys, 22, of Hatfield, Pa., was killed. The driver, Juan C. Guardardo, 23, of Oakland Park and front passenger, Eric B. Crotzer, 24, of Lansdale, Pa., were taken to Broward General Medical Center.

Both Crotzer and Guardardo were in critical condition, Ferrell said.

''We're not sure if alcohol played a part in this, but it is something that we're looking into,'' Ferrell said, referring to the driver. A law took effect in 2002 that requires motorists approaching vehicles with lights flashing to move over and slow down, Ferrell said.
