Police Stop Driver In South Brevard After Hit-run

August 18, 2005

An afternoon accident along Interstate 95 in Indian River County led to a brief police pursuit of a suspected hit-and-run driver through Palm Bay and Micco.

Both Palm Bay police and deputies with the Brevard County sheriff's office stopped the driver of a silver Chevrolet Silverado pickup after Indian River authorities issued an alert about the accident on the interstate.

The crash happened about 12:44 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the interstate near Fellsmere, a small town located less than a mile from the Brevard County line.

Indian River County officials said two vehicles were involved but one of the motorists drove off from the scene.

A rescue helicopter was called in to airlift at least one person seriously injured in the crash.

The Florida Highway Patrol asked Indian River County deputies to assist with traffic control on the highway.

But within minutes of the accident, officers got a description of the vehicle that left the scene and followed it into Brevard County, Luther said.

Officials said the driver continued going north about 20 miles on the interstate and exited on Malabar Road in Palm Bay heading east toward Babcock Street.

The truck then continued southbound on Babcock with several Palm Bay and sheriff's office patrol cars following it, officials said.

The driver, still unidentified, was pulled over for questioning on Micco Road. Officials don't yet know if it is the same vehicle but were expected to hold the driver for Indian River County traffic investigators.

Both northbound lanes of the interstate near the Fellsmere exit remained blocked off as Florida Highway Patrol troopers investigate the scene.
