Pedestrian Dies in Hit & Run, Driver Found

August 19, 2005

A 22-year-old man has been charged with driving his car into a pedestrian, killing him and then fleeing the crash scene in the 4400 block of North Congress Avenue.

Jason Tengbergen, of Boynton Beach, drove into Demez Dorvil, 23, of Boynton Beach, as Dorvil finished crossing Congress Avenue, Boynton Beach police said. Dorvil was taken to JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, where he died.

An off-duty Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office corrections lieutenant witnessed the hit-and-run and caught up to Tengbergen when his Mitsubishi stopped on Findon Drive, police said. An officer smelled the odor of alcohol coming from Tengbergen and his car, police said. Tengbergen later told an investigator that he had been drinking at a restaurant.

After the incident, Tengbergen was taken to the South County Mental Health Center in Delray Beach for evaluation. He was later arrested on charges of DUI manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident. He is being held at the Palm Beach County Jail without bond.
