A 7-year-old girl was hospitalized with serious injuries when she was struck by a school bus moments after trying to chase down the same bus to retrieve an umbrella, authorities said. The girl, whose name was not released, was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, said Ignatius E. Carroll, a Miami Fire-Rescue spokesman.
The incident occurred about 2:30 p.m. when the bus driver was en route to dropping off students picked up from Auburndale Elementary School, 3255 SW Sixth St. After the child left the bus, she apparently tried to get the attention of the driver, who had made a right-hand turn and didn't see the girl before hitting her, he said. He said the driver, whose name was not released, stopped the bus, saw the girl in the road and immediately called 911. Miami police are investigating the incident. No charges have been filed.
