Driver Flees Scene After Hitting Man On Bicycle

November 18, 2005

A 55-year-old Allapattah man on a bicycle was struck and seriously injured by a van driver who pulled alongside the bloody victim, looked, then maneuvered the vehicle around the fallen man and drove off, Miami Police reported. The victim, whose name was withheld until relatives could be notified, was in extremely critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, said Miami Police spokesman Delrish Moss.

The collision occurred near the intersection of Northwest 25th Avenue and 28th Street shortly before 6 p.m., Moss said. The man was riding a blue and silver three-speed bicycle south along Northwest 25th Avenue, when he was hit by a white, late-1990s westbound van, the spokesman said.

Police have determined that two passengers were in the van at the time of the accident. Moss said they will be considered witnesses until sometime early today; if they don't contact police promptly, they risk becoming accessories to the crime after the fact. ''We're giving them basically tonight and early tomorrow morning,'' Moss said. ``We realize they didn't leave [the scene] on their own power, but now they have a responsibility to do the right thing. What's ironic about this, is from the look of things, there probably would have been no charges had they stayed at the scene,'' Moss said. ``But it's a felony the moment you leave the scene.''
