Woman Sues After Hit By 'racing' Motorists

March 13, 2006

A woman who was nearly killed in a racing accident in Seminole County, Florida, this month has filed a lawsuit against the drivers charged in the incident.

Investigators said Maria De La Cruz, 55, was struck by a car on February 20 while walking near state Road 434 and Chapman Road on the south end of Oviedo.

In a lawsuit filed Monday, De La Cruz has asked for $15,000 in damages from Bryan Bell and Justin Culmo.

Witnesses said two cars, a red Ford Mustang and a Nissan, were racing each other when the Mustang lost control, jumped a curb and slammed into the woman standing on a sidewalk.

Police determined that Bryan Bell, 20, was driving the Mustang and Justin Culmo, 21, was driving the other vehicle.

Bell was charged with reckless driving with great bodily injury, racing on a highway and possession of marijuana.

Culmo was charged with reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, racing on a highway and failure to immediately report an accident.
