Two University Of Florida Students Injured In Accident

March 10, 2006

Two University of Florida juniors were taken to Shands at University of Florida with serious head injuries Saturday night following a head-on collision near campus.

Nicole Martingano, 19, of Port Orange, and Samantha Kaye, 19, of Ormond Beach, sustained the injuries after Martingano's Volkswagen was struck by a Lexus in the 2600 block of West University Avenue near SW 26th Street.

Gainesville Police said Andrea Vest, 22, was westbound in the Lexus when she crossed the center of the roadway and struck the Volkswagen.

Police said the teen was expected to live after undergoing surgery at Shands, however she remained in a coma Sunday with swelling of her brain.

Kaye also sustained head injuries and was transported to Shands, police said.

Vest sustained minor injuries in the crash.

Police said they're awaiting the results of a toxicology report to find out if alcohol was a factor.

Police said that Vest was talking on her cellular phone at the time of the accident.
