A Broward Sheriff's Office deputy and a Miramar police officer were injured in unrelated traffic accidents, officials said.
A Broward Sheriff's Office deputy was injured when a white Pontiac Grand Am hit his patrol car, said BSO spokeswoman Liz Calzadilla-Fiallo. The deputy was on routine patrol at the intersection of Southwest 20th Street and 41st Avenue near Fort Lauderdale, Calzadilla-Fiallo said. The deputy was trapped in the car, and it took rescuers several minutes to free him. He was taken to Broward General Medical Center in stable condition. The two people in the Grand Am suffered very minor injuries and were taken to Plantation General Hospital. The accident is still under investigation.
A Miramar police officer was injured when a large truck broad-sided the patrol car she was driving, said detective Josˇ Sanchez. The officer, whose name was not released, was driving west on Miramar Parkway around 6 p.m. The vehicles collided in the intersection at 172nd Avenue, where the traffic signal has not yet been repaired. A stop sign was posted after Hurricane Wilma, but one of the drivers didn't stop. Investigators have not yet determined who was at fault, Sanchez said. ''The officer is going to be OK,'' Sanchez said. ``Her injuries weren't life-threatening.''
The officer was on her way to one of the department's temporary stations at the Sunset Isles Community Center on 186th Avenue. Last week, the Miramar Police Station and dozens of apartment complexes and mobile homes were evacuated after weakened roofs caved in during heavy rainstorms. The officer was taken to Memorial Hospital Miramar for treatment.
