Late-night Chase Injures Deputy In Auto Accident

October 21, 2005

Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies arrested a West Palm Beach man who shot at another vehicle and led deputies on a late-night chase through Lake Worth and Boynton Beach. One deputy suffered minor injuries when he rear-ended the suspect's car.

Manuel A. Mendoza, 23, was charged with felony attempted murder, aggravated battery on an officer, felony fleeing and eluding, and reckless driving. According to an arrest report, Mendoza confronted Angel Hernandez in the restroom of a Lake Worth drive-in theater and followed Hernandez and three friends as they fled in their car.

Mendoza fired one shot that hit the right rear passenger window of Hernandez's car and drove off, the report says.

Deputies later spotted Mendoza and gave chase. Mendoza lost control of his car on the southbound lanes of Interstate 95, just north of Woolbright Road.
