Four Injured When Pickup, Small Car Collide

November 11, 2005

Both sides of Interstate 595 west of Pine Island Road were shut down for 20 minutes this afternoon and will be slow throughout rush hour after a pickup truck and small car collided, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Two people were airlifted and two others rushed to Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale around 3:20 p.m. after the white pick-up truck in which they were riding collided with a red compact car along Interstate 595, said Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Bill Ferrell.

The accident happened in the eastbound lanes of I-595 just west of Pine Island Road, Ferrell said. The impact sent the truck rolling multiple times, said Battalion Chief Brian Nolte of Davie Fire-Rescue. The men were removed from the truck. Although lanes have reopened, Ferrell said traffic will be slowed into rush hour along the western end of I-595. Nolte said the driver and passengers in the truck suffered serious injuries from the accident, enough that a trauma alert was sent to Broward General so doctors could be ready to treat the patients.
