Driver From Fatal Day-care Accident Charged

November 4, 2005

There is new evidence that the seats were unsecured in a day-care passenger van that rolled over in June, killing a 6-year-old boy.

The van was returning to a church day-care center in Daytona Beach from a field trip to Lake County.

Blake Stamper died and 10 other children were injured when the driver overcorrected and flipped the van on a rural road. The children and driver suffered minor injuries.

Officials with the Florida Highway Patrol said some of the pins that secure the bolts to the van's seats were not properly attached.

A mechanic's inspection report showed the van passed inspection. So now, authorities are trying to determine what happened to the missing pins.

Katie Matthias, 20, who was driving the van in June, will be charged with careless driving, according to police.
