A Polk County sheriff's deputy on his way to an emergency call ended up as a patient at a hospital when a driver ran a stop sign Friday morning and crashed into his patrol car.
Deputy Eric Powers got trapped inside his patrol car after a vehicle driven by Ronald A. Vessey hit his car on the passenger's side about 10:35 a.m. on Avenue D Northwest near Winter Haven City Hall.
Powers had minor injuries and was transported to Winter Haven Hospital.
Mr. Vessey, 65, who was driving a 2000 green Ford Focus, refused medical treatment.
He received a summons for failing to stop at a stop sign, said Polk County sheriff's Traffic Investigator Marty Schutt.
